What is OrganicProduceGeek.com?

OrganicProduceGeek.com is your source for weekly updates on what Organic Produce are in Peak Season, is Value Priced or has the Best Flavor -  or all three!  Jonathan K. Steffy is an expert on organic fruits and vegetables and he shares his freshest insights and market knowledge with you. This is information you can take with you each week to the Natural Food Store, Organic Market, Coop or Green Market where you shop to help you invest your money in flavor and healthiness. Invest? Yes, invest your money on fresh produce that is in season, delicious, good quality or a good value – instead of spending money on out of season, old crop, expensive or just the same ol’ standby items.

Let’s face it… What is good or cheap in the Conventional world may not be so in Organic, or vice versa.  Certified Organic Produce is highly regulated, costs more to grow, and there are less growers; so things tend to be more extreme than at a normal supermarket stocking conventional produce.  More extreme pricing, longer gaps in supply, shorter seasons – but also great care for the land, craftmanship in growing and fantastic produce variety.  Growing conditions, peak harvests, sizing, flavor and quality can change from season to season and year to year, based on weather patterns, consumer demand and many other factors.  OrganicProduceGeek.com will keep you in the know, allowing you to shop the organic produce section like you’re on a mission!

Our Story

For years friends and family who know I work in fresh produce wholesaling have asked me, “Hey, Jon, what’s good right now?” I always loved answering that question and trying to help whomever was listening with some insider tips about what to look for at their local produce department. These tips were derived from talking to growers, produce buyers, stores, markets and produce inspectors, not to mention seeing truckloads of produce arrive from all of the world. And sampling – lots of sampling!

Well, after some serious prodding, one buddy in particular demanded I send out a weekly email update to help him shop for fresh produce. A few other folks said, “Man, you gotta turn this into a website, people would love seeing this information.” My longtime friend, Justin Reber, who happens to be a talented designer and web expert, offered to craft and manage the website. Together we started ProduceGeek.com and began publishing the Eat This Now e-newsletter that comes out every Monday. And by the way, the photographs are as fresh as the content, typically shot in the kitchens, at a farmer market or in a major produce warehouse just days or even hours before getting posted.

Inspired by the passion for flavorful, healthy, in season produce that shoppers committed to an organic food lifestyle live out, Jonathan and Justin started OrganicProduceGeek.com in January of 2012 with the mission of providing helpful tips on what certified organic produce is best each week.   This site, the Organic Picks of the Week e-newsletter and accompanying social media are meant to benefit shoppers of natural foods stores, organic markets and coops – especially in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.  I work instensively with Organic Produce on the wholesale end and also closely with many of those stores that sell it to you. and know what which organic fruits and organic vegetables are best each week – be it a Value Priced, Peak Season, Best Flavor or all three.  What is good or cheap in the Conventional world may not be so in Organic, or vice versa.  OrganicProduceGeek.com will keep you in the know, allowing you to shop the organic produce section like you’re on a mission!

Produce is my passion! I love eating it, selling it, studying it and talking about it. Growing up I helped my Dad in our garden and worked for a farm that grew summer produce to sell at their farmer market stand. At the end of college I took an internship with Four Seasons Produce in Ephrata, PA and have been there ever since – over 11 years. Currently, I lead the a group of produce professionals who sell produce to Supermarkets, Natural Food Stores, Coops, Organic Markets, Chain stores and other Wholesalers in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as the Sales Manager. In addition to being a total geek for produce, I’m a family man, chow-hound, and Eagles and Phillies fan.  I try to use organic growing practices in my own garden and orchard, but have a lot to learn from the certified organic growers I come in contact with.  I love to share honest, delicious food with others – it has power to connect us.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Disclaimer and DisclosurThe Produce Geek, Jonathan K. Steffy, is employed by Four Seasons Produce, Inc. as the Sales Manager, where he gets much of his “industry insider” information. This website is a separate business. OrganicProduceGeek.com partnered with Four Seasons Produce to make the content of this website more available to stores that Four Seasons Produce supplies produce to so that those stores can get helpful information about What’s Best Right Now to their shoppers. That said, Four Seasons Produce is a really cool company, and if you’re in the produce or retail industry you should totally do business with them.

Wondering where to find the items described on this site? Email us and we’ll do our best to recommend a store or market. Oh, and readers: conditions greatly vary from store to store, so you may not find produce as fresh as sometimes described on this site – if so, talk to the produce manager, try another day or find a new place to shop.
