Organic Picks of the Week 03/12/12

Best if Used By 03/19/12

Organic Picks of the week for March 12th, 2012 features Green Cabbage, Bartlett Pears, Dandelion Greens, Strawberries and Iceberg Lettuce

1. Organic Green Cabbage

No, Saint Patrick is not the patron saint of Green Cabbage. Turns out the shamrock was a much easier thing to explain the concept of the Trinity than a head of Cabbage. Nevertheless, this IS a fantastic week to buy fresh Organic Green Cabbage to use for your St. Patty’s Day cooking and more! Many stores promote Organic Green Cabbage around this holiday. What makes this year different from the last several is that growing conditions for Organic Green Cabbage have been ideal over the winter in Florida, allowing for huge harvests this month of high quality product. Raw Cabbage is crunchy and has a lightly spicy zip to the flavor, while cooked Cabbage mellows out and becomes sweeter. Cabbage will hold up in your fridge for a couple of weeks, so buy some for your Corned Beef and Cabbage recipe or even a vegan version this week and save a head for Cole Slaw, Soup, Braised Cabbage, Salad, Cabbage Rolls, Colcannon, or something else tasty next week.

2. Organic Bartlett Pears

Late winter here means late summer in South America. Fresh, new crop Organic Bartlett Pears from Argentina are now in season! Organic Bartlett Pears are crunchy and fresh-sweet when their skin is green. Allow them to ripen at room temperature until the skin turns yellow for a soft, sticky-sweet and juicy eating pear.

Late summer down there = fresh Organic Bartletts up here.

3. Organic Dandelion Greens

Those in the need of a detox (flushing toxins from your system) can benefit from Organic Dandelion Greens. They’re high in vitamins and nutrients, and are a natural diuretic commonly used in juicing diets. On the other hand, those who enjoy flavorful vegetables can benefit from Organic Dandelion Greens too! Dandelion is a bitter green, a flavor somewhere between spinach and spring mix. It can be chopped raw and used in salads or blanched then sauteed with garlic and onions. Organic Dandelion Greens are in peak season in Florida and southern California this month.

Delicious detox greens.

4. Organic Strawberries

Mmm. Organic Strawberries are beginning to taste pretty good! The best fruit is coming from organic fields in California and Mexico right now. The Florida Organic Strawberries have been small, dull and lack shelf life. This is just a preview of things to come, as California is ramping up for a big Spring harvest of Organic Strawberries.

The Spring crop is coming!

5. Organic Iceberg Lettuce

In the world of Organics, Iceberg Lettuce is less popular with growers and consumers, and therefore, typically takes a back seat to the organic baby greens and organic leaf lettuces. This week and next may provide an exception. Excellent growing conditions in recent weeks are allowing for good yields, fresh quality and lower than normal prices on Organic Iceberg Lettuce. Blend Iceberg with other lettuce for added crispness in your salads, add it to sandwiches or serve it as a wedge topped with your favorite dressing.

Organically grown Iceberg Lettuce.
